THE BURNS PATH

The Fire Salamander Chronicles Book 0.5

What could possibly go wrong from a short walk through a peaceful midnight suburbia?

While living in Kendral, the only thing Gunz wants more than anything is to be back home in his world. And when his wish finally comes true, all he has to do is stay put for five days until his legal status is finalized. Just five days. How hard can it be?

But once he sees a young woman being abducted by a large group of demons, he can’t stay away. Before he knows it, he is neck-deep in a supernatural turmoil with no understanding of who is after him and why, and without any experience in using his magic and elemental power.

And if that isn’t enough, he has a couple of teenagers on his hands whose lives and safety depends on how fast he can unravel the mystery behind the demonic attack.

You know what they say... Be careful what you wish for. You'll get more than you bargained for.

"It is my great pleasure to review The Burns Path, The Fire Salamander Chronicles — Prequel by N.M. Thorn.

Right up front, let me say that it is super easy to overuse prologues, especially in a series of books. They can very easily be a crutch upon which some authors lean on a bit too heavily. But, I can say without equivocation that Thorn’s use of prologues is pure genius. Her prologues are super engaging, written in the same overall style as the rest of the book, super well-researched (when needed), and they are critical to understanding the larger conflicts within the stories that the main character of the series — Gunz — finds himself in.

I just love Gunz. He is a former Belorussian special forces soldier who discovered that he has access to the element of Fire on account of being a super-rare kind of elemental being called a Fire Salamander. Now, there are lots of perks that come with being an immortal elemental being, but there are also plenty of downsides and dangers to it — and as this is the prequel to Thorn’s series, Gunz has a LOT to learn about who and what he is, and how to wield his powers effectively without hurting countless others in the process.

This story sets up the larger series perfectly, introducing critical characters in The Fire Salamander Chronicles — there is Kal, The Fire Elemental and ruler of Kendra the world of magic who is teaching Gunz on how to master his element; Mrak Delar, an ancient Master of Power who helps set up Gunz with his new life in South Florida; and later on FBI Agent Jim Andrews.

This book is quick read and great introduction to Gunz, and the marvelous worlds of magic and mayhem that Thorn weaves together in her amazing series. It is not available for sale, but is instead given away as a freebie to those who subscribe to Thorn’s website. So, if you are looking to dip your toes into the world of these wonderful characters and go on a rousing adventure with Gunz while he is trying to figure out the fine balance between helping and hurting the people around him — go subscribe to Thorn’s website: www.nmthorn.com — and pick up this 5 star read for FREE! How can you beat that?"
